For over 20 years, The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command, with the help of our community partners and donors, has worked to ensure that children in Hampton Roads start the new school year with the “Write Stuff”. The Write Stuff Backpack Distribution is a three-day event that will take place inside the Hampton Roads Kroc Community Center located at 1401 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23504. Backpacks will be distributed to students in grades K through 12 who reside in Chesapeake, Norfolk, or Virginia Beach. Families who do not reside in these cities will need to locate their nearest Salvation Army for services.

The following documentation is required in order to receive a backpack:

  • Unexpired government-issued ID for parent/guardian- If you are not the biological parent or legal custodian of the child you are applying for, we will not be able to assist.
  • Proof of physical address– We will accept your Virginia ID/driver's license for this in most cases. If the address on your ID is different than where you currently reside, please also bring a lease, mortgage statement, or utility bill with your name/address.
  • Children’s birth certificates - Required to verify all school-aged children’s ages. If you are not the biological parent of the child, you will also need to provide additional custodial documentation listing you as their legal guardian.

The Salvation Army will distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to local K-12 students in need at the Hampton Roads Kroc Center located at 1401 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA. *While supplies last
