RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command Rental Program is available to households residing in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake. Funds can be used to pay 1-2 months of delinquent rent -OR- first month’s rent for clients moving into a new rental property. Funding and scheduling availability limit this program to 10-15 households per month with applicants only able to apply once every two years.

WHO QUALIFIES?

Service Area: Our office provides rental assistance to Norfolk, VA Beach, and Chesapeake residents only. If you live outside of this area, please contact The Salvation Army nearest you for information.

Frequency: You may apply for rental assistance with The Salvation Army once every 24 months.

Qualifying Rent Costs: Our rental program can typically pay up to 2 months of rent in the following circumstances

  • Delinquent Rent: The Salvation Army can pay toward rental delinquencies for the current month (and sometimes the prior month too) but require that applicants have a delinquency notice before applying.
  • First Month’s Rent: The Salvation Army can pay first month’s rent for applicants who have already locate a new rental property and obtain a move-in letter or preliminary lease. We can generally cover first month’s rent (full or prorated depending on the wording of the move in documents) and deposit.
  • Copayment?- Those owing more than 2 months of rent (including fees, deposits, etc.) will need to satisfy any overage prior to applying.

How to Apply- Upon receipt of a delinquency notice for the current month (or move-in documents for new renters), contact the Regional Housing Crisis Hotline (RHCH) at 757-587-4202. We are required to funnel all utility and rent requests through that office and cannot accept any requests made directly to our office. RHCH will place rental requests into a monthly queue then attempt to connect you to an agency best suited to your need (which may not be us!) Those selected for monthly rental referral will be submitted by Hotline staff to The Salvation Army directly and we’ll reach out to referred families to complete an interview and collect relevant paperwork.
